North Australian Diamonds Ltd is focused on its flagship Merlin Project in the Northern Territory, Australia, with the aim to establish a sustainable long term mining operation. The Company has previously undertaken resource definition drilling resulting in the identification of sufficient resource to underpin a 15 year plus mining project. In keeping with its staged approach to the project the Company has successfully completed its pre-feasibility production trials, recovering 10,600cts of diamonds and highlighting the potential to proceed to a commercial mining operation. Feasibility studies are currently being undertaken to determine the project scope.
The Merlin Project has significant near-term production potential and high priority exploration targets within the 2,859sq km tenement holding. The project is comprised of 14 kimberlite pipes of which 9 were subject to open-pit mining over a 5 year period commencing in 1998. The operations ceased in 2003 having produced 507,000 carats of diamonds. During its short operational life the Merlin Project was renowned for the production of top quality white diamond and large specials, the largest being 104.73 carats. North Australian Diamonds acquired the project from the Rio Tinto parties in 2004.
In addition to the Merlin Diamond Project, North Australian Diamonds has an extensive 26,046sq km tenement holding in Arnhem Land as well as a farm-in agreement with Rio Tinto to earn a 100% interest for diamonds in tenements which comprise 9,134sq km in the Daly River area. These tenements are considered to have potential for diamonds and other minerals.
Borroloola is one of North Australian Diamonds most exciting prospects, representing a significant and unique opportunity to explore for large volume, high value, alluvial diamond deposits. The Borroloola Alluvial Diamond Project tenements cover an area of approximately 1,150sq km, located some 100km north of the Merlin kimberlite field. Following 7 years in the application process the Northern Territory Governments' Department of Resources granted Exploration Licence 24512 (EL24512) to NADL, a very significant milestone for the Company.
The Borroloola gravels represent the only major concentration of alluvial material in a catchment that is known to host significant diamond bearing deposits. Sampling has confirmed that the Borroloola alluvial gravels are diamond bearing. The Company is now implementing an exploration and bulk sampling program to evaluate the diamond bearing potential of the gravel's over a much wider area. Being in proximity to testing equipment at the merlin Diamond Mine ensures rapid evaluation of the material extracted in the program.
Following the announcement made on 14 September 2011, the Northern Territory Governments' Department of Resources approved the Mine Management Plan (MMP) for EL24512, enabling the Company to begin the initial work program aimed at testing the diamond bearing potential of the known gravel deposits. The program, which began in September 2011 will test approximately 5000 tonnes of gravel.
The Company continues to retain a 31% interest in Top End Uranium ("Top End"), which it successful spun-out in late 2007.
